Signs of springs are all around us including bird sightings!

Today's provocations were materials to build binoculars for bird watching. They couldn't forget the string to hang them from their necks! We also made bird nests out of materials we collected outside on our nature walk (twigs/dry grass/leaves/mud)

BIRD WATCHING!

The picture above is two bird nests that was found in the trees from last year. The students got to see how birds use mud and other materials to create the nest. When the students build their own nest with their materials they realized just how hard it is. 'How does a bird do this' , this was a quote from one student today.

Our nest are on display in our classroom! They did a lovely job. They look good enough to eat!!

Earth Day

April 22nd is National Earth Day. We celebrated a few days later. It was important for students to know ways to save the earth.
'The Earth Book' shows us how to keep our plant safe like recycling, using two sides of the paper, and turning off the lights and TV when we leave the room.

Some students thought we needed more than just the earth hanging from the ceiling. One student created the 'red plant' he said (Mars).
Another student make a HUGE yellow sun but there is no picture :(

Spring has Sprung... Kind of!

We went on an outdoor adventure to find 'signs of spring'. Trust me, it was very difficult! We may have to wait for a few more weeks to really see all the signs.

GRASS IS SHOWING.... there are some green pieces of grass in there, it's hard to see on the photo.

Rocks and the ground is starting to show.

A stream of water from the melting snow!

LOOK Ms. we found a puddle of water... thank goodness for rubbers!

Buds starting to form on trees.

AND of course our favorite... MUD!!!

MORE MUD

AND.... More MUD!

** You may wonder why their clothes and mittens were rotten... we were learning once again:)
Their teacher will have to start doing laundry;).

We searched and searched for a bird. We couldn't even see a crow. Not to worry though, a student decided they could be a bird. Her arms are out and she is flying:).

We eventually found a bird ;)

Hoppy Easter

Easter was exciting! The students were working on their problem solving skills - how could they place the bunnies on the tower to ensure they wouldn't fall over?

Many students found out that the more bunnies they placed on each level, the better it balanced. They also wanted to find out how high they could build their tower of bunnies before it came crashing to the floor!

What's in the egg?
The students played a game of 'guess what'. They had to give each other hints as to what they had hidden in their egg.

It's found on the ground outside.
A ROCK!

They don't live here anymore.
A DINOSAUR!

It's a letter.
P!

It hops.
A BUNNY

It has 8 legs.
A SPIDER

It's long and white.
A PIECE OF WOOL

Healthy Teeth

April is Dental Health month so naturally we had to get involved in this occasion.
We've been practicing flossing with large lego blocks and germ bugs (also known as black playdoh).
A great way to practice the technique of flossing. Try it at home!

Egg-speriment ... get it?? :)

The outer shell of a boiled egg is very similar to our teeth. We discussed how eating/drinking too much sugar could cause germ bugs to destroy our teeth. We decided to check out the germ bugs in action. We placed a boiled egg in pepsi and a boiled egg in water for a day. The pepsi egg turned really brown and the egg in the water stayed white. We brushed the dirty pepsi egg and got some of the brown germs off but not all of it!
We learned we should limit the amount of sugar we eat/drink.
