First day in the Outdoor Classroom. They were excited to explore. We brought our pumpkins outdoors to investigate them as a part of our pumpkin inquiry. You may have seen some pumpkin pulp on their coats:).

Look how amazing this classroom is!

Leaf Man

Leaf Man

If you ever get the chance to read the 'Leaf Man' book by Lois Ehlert, please do so!

Leaf Man gets blown around in the wind to form interesting other objects. All images that are formed in the book use leaves.
We decided we could create one as well. We collected an assortment  leaves from our outdoor exploration.
Unfortunately, we did not use proper glue. We needed white glue and not glue stick:(. The leaves dried up and fell off. But we did have fun creating our own version of Leaf Man.

Fisheries and Oceans

Special Guest

Yolanda Fillier who works with Fisheries and Oceans joined us for a presentation. All five classes will receive this presentation.

Students watched videos on the importance of keeping the oceans safe for the animals.

The exhibit below is an example of how pollution from our daily lives can affect the ocean.

Yuck! Look at that polluted water.
Also, remember to cut the drink rings when throwing them in the garbage. Did you know that balloons that are put into the sky can fall into the ocean and cause the death of turtles!! We didn't!

Meet the leather back turtle. This is an actual size replica. Students got to give him a big hug!

Students are holding a replica of leather back turtle eggs.

Thank You Yolanda!

The Pumpkin Inquiry

 The Pumpkin Inquiry

As  a part of the Science Kindergarten Curriculum, students are required to learn about life cycles. Since it's pumpkin season, we decided why not learn about the life cycle of the pumpkin. However, there is so much more a pumpkin can teach us like size, shape, and color.

Here students use selected colors to complete their drawing of the pumpkin presented to them. There were four different pumpkins. Some were orange, and some were yellow. Some were long, and others were short. Finally, some were big and some were small.

What size is your pumpkin?
'My Pumpkin is 10 blocks tall'.
Using blocks as a measurement tool.

The library provided us with some great books on the life cycle of a pumpkin. In the books, we found the proper terms for the life cycle including; seeds, sprout, vine, flower and pumpkin.

Sprouts have arrived.

Then comes the flower.

Finally, our pumpkins are ready to pick!

Opening up the pumpkins.

Learning new terms:
- Rind
- Pulp
-Seeds

Provocations are materials provided to students with a purpose. We use open ended materials that students can explore to uncover the curriculum.

Students are learning via play.

Counting puffs to make shakes. Anyone thirsty?

Numbers everywhere...

Words are forming...

Structures are being built,

Painting letters with 'wet' paint.

Punctuation marks are happening.

Healthy and Non Healthy Foods

Sorting. They couldn't quite figure out pizza. They said it has bread, and tomatoes but we probably shouldn't eat it all the time:).

Making a healthy meal from all four food groups. We are working on this;).
