Fine Motor Practice

Playdoh is a great way to build fine motor skills. Fine motor skills are needed to build a strong pencil grip!

A lock and key is a great way to strengthen those fine motor skills! In this activity created by a parent the students had to count the number of yellow beads on the key and match it to the number on the lock! 

The Shape of Things

The first topic we have been exploring in Kindergarten is shapes! We have been recognizing, tracing, and building with shapes. 

We read the book 'The Shape of Things" where students saw the transformation of shapes. A circle turned into a Ferris wheel and a rectangle turned into a train:) 

We went on a circle hunt in the classroom with our 'magic paintbrushes'.

It is a new school year!

Welcome to the Kindergarten 2017-2018 Blog

All five Kindergarten teachers are returning for an exciting year of adventures and exploration in the classroom. 

We are off to Fairyland! 

Some students have been interested in fairies lately. Staying true to the notion of provocations in Kindergarten, we built on this interest to begin writing letters and building structures. 

This letter above says "Please bring me 4 pairs of fairy wings"

We set up fairyland outside in the outdoor classroom. We hoped that a fairy would show up.....

AND she did!!!

Number Lines

We have taken math outside!

Students paired up and had to write numbers 1 to 10 on a number line. They had to stand on a number while their partner asked them to move "more" or "less". 

(ie. Move 3 less than 4 or move 2 more than 1) It's another way of  adding and subtracting. 

I'm sure you have heard about the little chicks we have been watching hatch. They have been incubated for 21 days. Two have hatched today. We will soon be able to hold them in our hands, don't worry we will wash them after!

We have been learning what 'sticky chicks' are, it is when the chicks are scared because of a loud environment and then they will not survive. Whisper voices:) 

Visiting the chicks has been a privileged for the students. They are located in Mr. Monk's Grade 5 classroom.

"We are saving the environment" - a direct quote from a student today!

We have been learning about ways to conserve energy and save the environment. 

Students said the following;

-turn the lights off when leaving a room

- turn the tv off when leaving a room

- recycle

- put your trash in the trash can

- turn the water off when brushing your teeth

- don't fill the bathtub full

Today we decided to help the environment by doing some 'spring' cleaning around our school. We cleaned 8 garbage bags of litter! We were shocked to find some recyclables in the garbage. 

We are headed to the large RED dumpster to throw in our garbage bags.
