We had some special guests today! Fire chief Cory and fireman Kent came to talk to us about Fire Safety. Students probably asked you to check your fire alarms today! It's also important for them to have an exit plan in case there is a fire in their house. Create a map!!:) 

We also had one of our student's brothers from grade 5 come join us for a 'how to draw' session. He showed us how to draw a ghost. We are getting ready for Halloween!

I wonder... what fall trees will look like?

Fall has arrived! The trees are changing colors and the students have been creating what they think fall trees look like. 

Today's provocations were Q tip painting with fall leaf colours. Tap the  magic tree is one of our favourite books and all children should have a copy of this book from kinderstart. It depicts how trees change during seasons. 

In provocations we use a lot of loose parts, which some people may see as 'trash', we see it as learning tools. We used pieces of twigs, colourful jewels, wood chips and mirrors to create fall trees. The mirror provides good reflection for children to see their work from different angles. 

Taller than!

Building happens everyday in Kindergarten. Through this type of play, we begin to hear and speak in 'math' terms. In the first picture, they counted animals that were in the zoo! In the pictures that follow, there was a lot of discussion among the students about how tall their tower was. Students could be heard saying, 'that tower is TALLER than me'. What a great math sentence! 

Farm and Market

Here are some pictures from our first field trip to the Farm and Market in Clarenville. Many students had their first bus ride as well! We got to pick tomatoes, and carrots. They also saw a root cellar and got to take a piece of Kale home. 

Sorting

To begin our pattern unit in mathematics we have been sorting objects. We sorted heavy and light objects into brown bags. We also sorted boys and girls and realized we have double the amount of boys than girls! We also sorted using eye and hair color. Mathematics is all around us, try sorting at your house!

Perfect Patterns!

We've been learning about patterns in Kindergarten!  We started out using pom poms of different colours and sizes to make our patterns.  We talked about how a pattern is a group of things that repeat over and over.  But, before we could make a pattern, we had to sort our pom poms by colour.

Stringing Numbers

We love counting in Kindergarten!  We also love finding new ways to do it!  Using buttons and pipe cleaners help us to exercise our brains and fingers while counting!
