Trees, Building, and 3D shapes

The students are learning that there are 4 seasons and that some trees change depending on the season. The students had the chance to make trees for each season using loose parts. I have some really great photos but I couldn't share them to the blog because their faces are in them. I will put these pictures in their scrapbooks:) 

The students are getting very creative in the block area, this is  a picture of an amusement park that they built. They have also built water slides and castles! It is pretty cool to see! 

We are learning about 3D solid shapes in our geometry unit this week. The students went on a 3D shape hunt around the classroom to collect objects that look like a ball (sphere), can (cylinder), a cone, and a box (cube). The students are not required to know the technical names but they need to know what objects in their world look like 3 D shapes. For example a can of soup, and a glass of milk all have a 'can' shape. 

Bones and Math Sets

In case your children are sharing their stories of the moose bones they saw today, I thought I should post the pictures as soon as possible. The students were very excited to explore a set of old moose bones. They got to compare the size of their jaw with the size of a moose jaw, they counted the teeth, and wiggled a moose' loose tooth. It was a fun experience! 

We also worked on math sets today, we created a set and then the challenge was to create a set with less than, more than, and the same as. They did well with this activity.

The Pumpkin Inquiry

The students learned the Life Cycle of a Pumpkin during Halloween. We learned that a seed is planted in the ground, then a sprout appears, a vine grows above the ground, then yellow flowers appear on the vine. After the yellow flower dries up, the fruit (pumpkin) develops. We also carved a pumpkin, counted the seeds, and broke the seed apart to see what it looked like inside. 

HALLOWEEN!

Spooktacular Halloween!

We began our Halloween adventures making some 'ghost seekers'. The students are learning to use recycled materials to create toys. 

We didn't have any orange paint but not to worry, we learned that if we mix red and yellow together we can make orange paint! Super COOL! 

Then things got real witchy! We created witches, and we also cooked up some spells in our witches cauldron. 

Take notice our spells contained beginning sounds, /t/, /w/, and /j/   

Can you spy the Kindergarten rock art? This is one of the rocks that a Kindergartner and their Gr.6 Buddy created and hid together. 

First the students painted their rocks and then we went on a walk to the playground to hide them. 

A spider is also a symbol of Halloween. We completed a tally chart with the question, "Are you afraid of spiders?" 

The students had to read the words Yes and No, then decide on their answer. Most students were not afraid of spiders. 

A special guest dropped off some gourds for our class. The students got to take a gourd home for Halloween. We drew pictures, sorted, and counted the gourds. 

A pile is VERY difficult to count..... so....

we learned that putting items in a line can really help us count! 

Some extras...

A student in another kindergarten class brought in their chickens and quails to visit our school. Luckily, we got to hang out with them too! 

We also found  a little squirrel dumpster diving!
